Day 36, San Lazzaro, Italy -visit to Pompeii

Pottery recovered from the ashes
Found out the other night that I am not the only one who uses the bidet to soak their feet, haha, one of the English ladies who were staying next door also does, plus she has used it to cool a bottle of wine!
Today was Pompeii. A bus and train ride to get there, but all good. So interesting, all this history. The site was much larger than I had imagined, and there were a lot of houses still very intact.
House of the Faun, largest in Pompeii
So fascinating to see how well houses were already being constructed then, even with plumbing. Rainwater was collected in the rainy season and stored to supply running water throughout the year. The floors in some houses, beautifully inlaid with small pieces of decorative marble. And some of the paintings (frescoes) are still intact.
Frescoes behind the little fountain
Pompeii had been struck by an earthquake 17 years prior to the volcanic eruption that was its demise, so a lot of the city was damaged already and still under construction (don't we know about that). You wander the streets though and the thought that 2000 years ago people also lived here, it quite humbling really.
It was 40 degrees in Pompeii, an occasional stop in the shade with a blessed breeze, then battle on. 'Caldo' is on everyone 's lips, surprisingly that means hot!
Managed to find both the train and bus back to San Lazzaro, and a beautiful cold beer in the Piazza before the walk home.
The best preserved house
