Day 173, near Varanasi, India

Chris, Mary, Kathryn and me on the Ganges
This morning we watched the sunrise over the Ganges from the boat while listening to a man play the sitar, an instrument similar to a guitar but 20 strings.

But the highlight of the day, and this tour, was this afternoon. We were taken on 3 boats, 4 per boat, on a trip on the Ganges, 23 kilometres altogether. Two oarsmen per boat, while we lay back on mattresses and pillows and watched the scenery change. Children playing in the water, fishermen bringing up their nets, all happily waving at us as we passed. The water is reasonably clean, especially near our campsite. It was so peaceful and serene, the occasional dolphin spotted.
By 5 o'clock we reached our campsite for the night, small two- men tents erected for us by the crew.

A special toilet tent, which Mary christened before it was quite ready, which was hilarious (well it was to Kathryn and me!). A beautiful tasty dinner was served while we were sitting on a huge rug, unfortunately putting lights on attracted a million moths. This is Intrepid travel at its best.
