Day 213, Sapa, Vietnam

Rice fields
We checked out of our lovely hotel this morning after breakfast, as tonight I am going back to Hanoi and Inger stays longer but the hotel was booked so she moved somewhere else in town instead.

Then we set off for our hike (after a yummy morning tea including apple cake).
We had sorted out yesterday where we wanted to go. Sapa lies in the Muong Hoa Valley, and in that valley lie various little hilltribe villages. Unfortunately some of it has become so tourist orientated, where you actually have to pay an entrance fee to enter the village, which is absolutely ridiculous of course. We didn't go there, pretty much managed to walk passed and ended up walking through some real little settlements, not where everything is geared towards people coming in to ogle the villagers.
Look at the size of that knife!
We wanted to see the valley and the rice fields and beautiful scenery and accomplished this. We walked for 4 hours altogether, sadly the clouds were low today and obscured what would have been some stunning vistas. However, it was a great walk; we were accompanied by a pig and some piglets for a while, the clouds lifted long enough for some nice photos and all along we were greeted warmly by the locals. We are very close to China here, and the hill tribe people look almost Mongolian.
Village houses
Back to Sapa ( a long slow climb up the hill) and time for an afternoon snack and beer before I boarded the bus that took me to Lao Cai where the trainstation is. This town is right on the border with China, if I went for a walk for 5 minutes I would be in China!
Duck duck...
No sad goodbyes as Inger and I will meet up again end of January to spend some more time in Thailand. Night train again tonight for me, I love sleeping on these, super comfy and the motion of the train just rocks you to sleep 💤
